Is the golden door still open ?
Immigrants from Mexico deal with stricter policies and renforcement agreements.
Immigration remains a central issue in the U.S marked by declining border crossings and hearted political debates.Unauthorized entries at the US-Mexico border have dropped by over 50 % this year due to stricter asylum policies and enforcement agreements with Mexico. Everybody has in mind Trump's wall.
During the 2024 campaign, candidates have expressed different ideas. Donald Trump wants more deportations and tougher asylum rules, while Kamala Harris supports easier legal immigrations and protections for DACA recipients.
Immigrants help the economy by filling important jobs and increasing productivity. However, stricter rules could reduce workers and slow economic growth.
People remain divided on the issue, with many asking for reforms to balance border security and support for immigrants.
To expand on the important reasons people seek refuge in the United States, here is a testimony from Maria Lopez, 37 years old, left her home in Chiapas in Mexico, with her 2 children : " I didn't want to leave my family, but we had no choice. There are no work in my village, and my children were hungry. My dream is for them, they need to go to school to have opportunities."
For Maria, and many other immigrants, the elections may design a brand new future...but which one ?
Trump and Harris's ideas on immigration When running for president in 2020, Harris promised to close private immigration detention centers, limit deportations and fight for a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants in the United States. She now says she wants to sign into law the tough border compromise that Congress was unable to pass in 2024 after Donald Trump objected to it.
Trump stated in September 2023 that if reelected, he intended to implement the largest mass deportation of undocumented immigrants in American history, referencing a 1950s operation to deport undocumented immigrants under President Eisenhower known as "Operation Wetback".
