One of the most direct ways communication changes voter opinion is through how candidates frame the issues. Political campaigns strategically choose how to present topics to the electorate, often by highlighting certain aspects of an issue while downplaying others. For example, a candidate may frame healthcare as a fundamental right to gain support from liberal voters, or as a system in crisis to rally those concerned about government spending. These frames help shape voters’ understanding of policies, influencing their stance on issues.

The 2016 and 2020 U.S. presidential elections highlighted the importance of framing. Both Donald Trump and Joe Biden used distinct messaging to frame issues like immigration, the economy, and national security to appeal to different voter bases. Effective framing can solidify support or change opinions by focusing on issues that resonate with specific demographics.

Slogans, speeches, and simplified messages are essential tools for mobilizing the masses because they help to effectively communicate ideas, inspire action, and unite people toward a common cause. Speeches are a direct form of communication from leaders to their followers. A well-delivered speech can inspire confidence, articulate the vision of a movement, and provide clarity on the goals and tactics.
